about

THE CARIBOU AND THE WOLF is a collaboration between me (singing the songs!) and my friend Ricky (artist extraordinaire). The full album download includes a hand-screened patch - a piece of "the fabric of the album".

Ricky (RICK TAGABAN) is a Tlingipino artist from Juneau, Alaska. The fabric of THE CARIBOU AND THE WOLF is a large original screenprint that has been segmented into patches. This concept references the Tlingit tradition of chopping up tinaas (copper shields) to pay debts. Ricky's apprenticeships include silver carving with Tlingit artists Ed Kunz Jr. and Sue Folletti, cedar bark weaving with Tlingit/Haida artist Della Cheney, and Chilkat weaving with Clarissa Rizal. He is pursuing a Liberal Arts degree at the University of Alaska Southeast with a major in Tlingit language and a minor in art. His work is exceedingly more contemporary, but is strongly based on Tlingit tradition.

THE CARIBOU AND THE WOLF is my first solo album. The songs emerged during late 2011 and early 2012, set in Alaska and the Pacific Northwest. I have been a member of various bands over the years (all with "wolf" names, believe it or not) including Wolf Electric (Chugiak, Alaska) and We Are Wolves (Portland, Oregon).

Track Name: A Letter From Anchorage
Your first lover when he saw you
After ten years and he told you
You're looking so much wiser than I knew you
It lets you know you're alright, alright

And your mother when she sold you
To your sisters who adore you
You finally found your way back to the old town
Finally got your feet back on the ground

Drawing circles in our hometown
Takes us back there to the same place
Passing long nights with the old friends
Knowing it's the right thing that you might stay

You damned last November when you came home
But there's a man who is nothing without you by his side
This land it has kept us sure as the moon pulls the tide
To the ones we remember, the ones we call home

Are you finding what you're low on
As you sit down by the (Knik) Arm
Of the ocean where you're from
Are you feeling alright, alright

As the raven stole the sun
With the knowledge you have won
You say you'll head out in the spring
We know you through the blackness of your wings

So you're saving up for later
You say you're not stuck in this town
Another cold cold northern winter
You're not gonna let it get you down

You damned last November when you came home
But there's a man who is nothing without you by his side
This land it has kept us sure as the moon pulls the tide
To the ones we remember, the ones we call home
Track Name: The Caribou and the Wolf
You said let's watch the caribou
All moving they are red and blue
The wolves will pick the weakest ones
To pass the life to their own sons

Red hands are swinging little men
They curl and turn the feathers bend
The fire burning in your spine
Is the flame that burns through all of time

Now wooden faces show the truth
Their stories hidden shining through
The good concealed beneath their deeds
Then love will bring the lasting peace

Our elders sang the songs we heard
Through us pronouncing every word
The spirits moving all around
The tones they groan a sacred sound

You said let's watch the caribou
All moving they are red and blue
We are what we are meant to be
Apart then one to set us free
Track Name: Kansas is Burning
Here in the Bible Belt you know we're up to no good
Doing other things than we say you should
Where the preacher left his family
Through the night with a whiskey and a lady

Where the freeways and the engines run
On the plants and the animals from under ground
And we waged war on the free and pure
And the angels took away our glory

Now slaves to the money and its evil seed
With 900 wives and foul luxuries
We come a long way from the golden age
When the land and the river was a maiden

We built the cities up and we spread them around
We were kings smiling when we stole the land
There's a railroad running to the sea
And there are spirits weeping in the prairies

Oh brothers wake up from the things we done
And turn to the east for the morning sun
For the new dawn and a new day
Until the sun will rest beneath the valley

Oh sisters rise up now your time has come
And dance like the lights in the northern sky
May the rain fall and the rivers run
And carry us safely through this journey
Track Name: I Am
When we grow up, do we have to act big
How should we behave as our faces age
'Cause there's a life ahead that's left to live
For now I am yours, you know I got a lot to give

It is what it is.
I am.
I am.

When the children play, what do they make
We can work all day, but did we sing a song
We can worry ourselves, but does it fix everything
And with the money we make, what did we miss out on

And when we hold hands, why do we let go
Why do we wear clothes, why can't our bodies show
And when we fight what do we win
And when we make love, what's really happening

And when we dream, what do they mean
Are they silly scenes, are they fantasies
But what's really real, when we open our eyes
Is it what we see and feel, or is there more to find

When we grow old, will we carry on
And if we pass on, then were do we go
We can just suppose what's at the end of this road
So what matters most, is the path we're on
Track Name: Frozen Winter Sun
Here's the chords so you can sing along :)

C
I'm dyin' for distraction
G
I think I'll get it in Tennessee
C
I'm taking 40-E to Nashville
G
Anything just to set me free
C
From the thought that you are leavin'
G
That you found a better way to get around
C
The old time music came to save me,
G
And lakes of bourbon to wash it down

You're no different than the rivers
We're just the same as the deep blue sea
You rumble through the valleys
You change shapes but you're a part of me
There's a boat that's spinnin' freely
You know it's carried by our love
But there are waterfalls a crashin'
Unexpected from up above

................ Am............................G
And I'll be torn apart and broken hearted
.......... Am.....................................................D
If you leave me, won't you tell me you're the one
................C....................D
You're my darlin' on the run
.................G................. Em
You're my frozen winter sun
............C....................D..............................G
And I'll love you even though you're good as gone

In my mind there's a movie
We grow old in a little house
No troubles, no worries
We watch the sun set against the clouds
I heard a whisper that you were leavin'
That there's an ending where you don't stay
The old time music came to save me
From the story that's goin' the wrong way

And I'll be torn apart and broken hearted
If you leave me, won't you tell me you're the one
You're my darlin' on the run
You're my frozen winter sun
And I'll love you even though you're good as gone
Track Name: Vancouver (BC)
I lined up the mountains along the Cascades
My eyes followed each and every snowy top
The places pass so far below the airplane
Above this haze I'll stay
Over the weekend you and I took a long ride
The train comes later so I think I'll stay lady
Oh can I stay lady
Please let me stay lady

Go runnin' in the downpour all through your city
At the edge of the ocean you've known me forever
Step into the water, I will pull you deeper
Let go for a moment everything is clearer

I remember your room where we shared those secrets
And we hid them away where no one can see
Let's take it farther than they could ever have known
Then we'll tell other people, just say the word
And through the Tongass don't you mind those borders
A pause on the bridge and the winter's a comin'
You said this town has got a lot to offer
But I don't think I'll stay

Go runnin' in the downpour all through your city
At the edge of the ocean you've known me forever
Step into the water, I will pull you deeper
Let go for a moment everything is clearer
Track Name: That's the Feeling!
It's like the moment when I peer down,
Over the railing and I get uneasy
The tipping feeling as I drift off to sleep
It's the sensation after stopping,
That everything around me is still moving
That's the feeling when I'm with you

It's like the notion when I'm dreaming,
I'm wide awake even though I am sleeping
The stinging feeling when my fingers go numb
It's like the second when I realize
I'm turned around inside of my own city
That's the feeling when I'm with you

When I glimpse you out in passing
Out of the corner of my eye some beauty
A second look and then I realize it's you
You know it's funny when I'm speaking
The word I'm thinking but I say some other
That's the feeling when I'm with you

When you're lying there beside me
And you move closer just so you can feel me
I find your hand and hold it under the sheets
I hold it tight so that you don't fly,
Right out the window when the world stops spinning
That's the feeling when I'm with you

And when you're gone you're still inside me
With every breath you are the air that fills me
You're all around me every color I see
I feel you moving with the rhythm,
Of all the planets you're the space between them
That's the feeling when I'm with you

a St. Louis I don't recognize

Down the Mississippi where the cajun gypsies play
Or east on to Georgia, where my baby ran away
You and me are like this town, we're fighting for our lives
Mound City's changing, pulling apart from every side
This midwestern air is gray and rather cold
We're waiting for the harvest
But one by one the tracts were sold
They were sold
Oh, oh, oh

We ran chasing rabbits when we were young
Maeoma on the phone, asking how your brother's done
She laid down, turned to a firefly
The Lord took her home,
And now the oak tree's growing old
Standing at the gate from the eastern side
I can see the old house if I close my eyes
A St. Louis I don't recognize
